Big Foot Sprints is a sprint format orienteering event with participants running two legs. The second leg is run as a real chasing start, with competitors starting leg 2 as far behind the leader as they were in the results of the first leg. Thus the first person to finish the second leg is the Big Foot Billy Whiz Sprints Champion.

The 2009 event gave us a chance to use the 1:5000 map of Nurragingy for the first time. An overcast day put off the faint-of-heart, but a strong turn-out by Big Feet made for a good race.

The first sprint was contained to the picnic areas of Nurragingy and the grounds of the Colebee centre.

Jock Davis, a multiple Sprints winner led home the field with Paul "Stix" Marsh the runner-up. Those two had a big gap on the next runner, Tracy Marsh, the fastest woman. Alexa Troedson was the fourth fastest, putting a little bit of pressure on Tracy. Further down the field the big talk was the poor form of Jo Annabel Parr, also holder of multiple Sprints titles.

Continuing drizzle saw the chasing start depart from the results shelter for the second sprint. The waiting starters could see those in front diverging before they went out of sight, causing much speculation about the first leg.

 Jock cruised around the second sprint, extending his lead over Paul Marsh. Paul was almost caught by Tracy, with both of them in sight of the spectators at the same time, but Tracy couldn't close down the gap over the last few controls.

Further down the field, Alexa was over-taken by a pack containing Dmitry Stukov, Dave Lotty and Michael Free. Dmitry and Dave got away from Michael as he lost the plot in the lake system, and was almost overhauled by Alexa in the run-in. Dave Lotty was over-taken by Dmitry with five metres to go, but it turned out that Dmitry had forgotten to punch a control, handing Dave the chocolates for 3rd place.

Further down the field, Jo Letitia Parr was desperately trying to redeem herself and ran the second fastest sprint 2 (Tracy was fastest) which lifted her through the field but left her chocolate-less as Marie Ringer had a steady run to get the third place chocolate in the women's field.
