Competitors found the going tough by foot (long grass) and by bike (sticky tracks) as Patrik Gunnarsson's epic courses tested their endurance. A massive thunderstorm soaked the tail end of the field, causing them further grief, but at least the snakes disappeared at that point.
Early leader on the long, Glenn Horrocks attributed his speed to the new Garingal O-suit he was prototyping (see below, if you dare). He held on to his lead despite another strong performance by Big Foot's Greg Barbour, who was the fastest competitor from the start to the last but three control, when he made a relatively big mistake (?puncture) and finished just over a minute behind. Late starter David Simpfendorfer just edged Greg but couldn't beat Glenn, with the three of them taking 2:40:27, 2:41:27 and 2:41:37. Great racing guys.
Mel Simpson in 6th place overall beat Gill Fowler (7th) as the quickest two ladies, taking 3:12:48 and 3:31:31.
On the short course, it looked as though Rob Prentice would easily win, with the hirsute superman clocking 2:01:03, some 20 minutes ahead of his nearest rival. Sadly for Rob, the final starter on the short course, Marina Iskhakova smashed his time, clocking 1:54:03.
