NEWCASTLE ORIENTEER OF THE YEAR # 2 - KITCHENER

Second event of the NOY series in part of Werakata SCA with courses for all abilities. Newcomers welcome!

DATE: Sunday 4 May 2025
STARTS: 9:30am to 11:30am. COURSE CLOSURE: 1:00pm

DIRECTIONS: FROM THE JUNCTION OF LEGGETTS DRIVE AND LAKE ROAD NEAR MULBRING turn west onto Lake Road. Continue for 7.3km then turn left (south) into Kearsley Rd and travel 2km into Abernethy. Turn right into Murray St/Abernethy St and travel 2.8km west towards Kitchener. At Cessnock St/Quorrobolong Rd turn left and travel south for 500m to the parking on the right (near Sawpit Road eastern end).
FROM CESSNOCK travel south through Kitchener and continue 500m past the Abernethy St intersection to the parking area on the right (near Sawpit Road eastern end).

PARKING: Park along the western side of Quorrobolong Rd. Please park efficiently to optimise the space. The assembly is on the eastern side of the road. TAKE CARE CROSSING THE ROAD AS IT IS 80 KMH!

ASSEMBLY: Assembly area is 150m east from Quorroblong Rd along Cowyard Link Trail.

NOTES:
- Spectacular erosion gullies to be explored on all courses. While there is some green and/or spiky vegetation the courses use the more runnable areas to avoid it as much as possible.
- There are many termite mounds on the map. Lots of them are degraded and no longer visible. The setter has tried to delete any that are gone and add any that are new in relevant areas but the whole map has not been checked so there may be some that are incorrect.
- There is a small Out of Bounds area shown near the dam which is to be avoided (there is a caravan and there have been caged dogs there so please do not approach). This is only near to the HARD courses and MODERATE LONG and these courses do not go directly past this area.

SPECIAL MAP SYMBOLS: Brown triangle = termite mound, Black cross = wreckage, Black circle = man-made feature.

EASY: 2.1km / 40m / 11 / Controls near to tracks or other linear feature
MODERATE SHORT: 2.6km / 50m / 11 / Intermediate navigation
MODERATE LONG: 3.4km / 80m / 12 / Intermediate navigation
HARD SHORT: 3.3km / 70m / 10 / Difficult navigation
HARD MEDIUM: 5.1km / 110m / 12 / Difficult navigation
HARD LONG: 6.7km / 120m / 15 / Difficult navigation

SAFETY: Safety Bearing is WEST to Quorrobolong Rd then north to the assembly area. Take care crossing Quorrobolong Rd from the parking. Hard courses and Moderate Long see note about Out of Bounds area.

WATER: Please bring your own water.
